Parish Council Chairman

Graham Sheldon

Councillor Graham Sheldon

I have been a parish councillor for ten years. Eight years elected to Greenfield and Grasscroft, and the last two years as councillor for Uppermill.

This is my first time as Chairman of Saddleworth Parish Council and a year I am looking forward to along with my wife Diane.

As a parish councillor I have been elected to serve the residents of Uppermill and Saddleworth. I am also the Subpostmater at Uppermill Post Office where I meet and keep in regular contact with local people Saddleworth is continually changing and developing and as a parish council, we have a duty to protect the natural beauty of the area, and prevent the overdevelopment of the villages. I am encouraging local people to be involved with the task of identifying areas which should be protected as open spaces. This will help to stop the villages merging into an urban sprawl and losing their identities.

A new site for Saddleworth school may be decided soon. I am determined to listen to the suggestions and concerns of local people, as this will be a significant development in Saddleworth, and will affect many people for many years. We must make sure the right decision is made for the future of Saddleworth School.

We now have the Saddleworth Parish council and Saddleworth and Lees district partnership working towards the interests of Saddleworth, along with several residents groups in Saddleworth. Whenever possible the combined effort of these committees and groups should be aiming  to achieve the best for Saddleworth.

The Chairman’s Charity this year will be Dr Kershaw’s and St Mary’s Stillbirth and Placenta Research. There will also be many donations to local groups and clubs. Many events will be held at the Civic Hall and by popular request there will be a Calendar for 2014 with Local views of the Saddleworth Villages through the seasons Sponsored by Local Businesses.

I am looking forward to the next twelve months and know that we have a great Charity committee who generously give their time, talent and many donations to help the Chairman of the council each year. I am also happy that Vice Chairman Mrs Enid Firth will be a great support to Diane and I this year.
