New financial services for Saddleworth, with Vernon Building Society set to arrive

Saddleworth is set to see a new building society taking up residence on Uppermill High Street. Vernon Building Society were at Saddleworth Parish Council this week, ahead of their expected opening in November.

Chief executive Darren Ditchfield and business development manager Ian Wilson came to the Parish Council ahead of their opening to talk through the services that they offer with both financial services for both individuals and businesses.

Darren said: “We’re delighted to be bringing face-to-face financial services back to the villages of Saddleworth, which have been without a high street branch for nearly a decade. Opening in Uppermill will allow us to offer more convenient access to the personal service they’ve missed.”

The more-than 100 year old building society is moving outside Stockport, where it has operated since 1924, and will be moving in to share premises with Pearsons Solicitors on the High Street, with face-to-face banking services available from 10am–4pm, Tuesday to Thursday.

It is a traditional building society, offering individuals and business savings packages, as well as mortgages to help local people on the property ladder. They also run a charitable foundation, which is committed to invest in the local community, with two grant schemes running to support local groups.

Parish Council Chair Barbara Beeley said: “The Parish Council has been firmly committed to getting financial services made available in the community, and seeing a building society expanding into the area confirms our belief that there is a market here which banks are. Currently ignoring, to their detriment.

“Saddleworth is a great place for businesses to invest in, and this is just one example.

”We will continue to put pressure on the Government to encourage more banking services into our area – but this is a real step forward, with face to face financial planning becoming available in a way that simply wasn’t the case before.”
